Dissertation I Visual Design
From the Archives of Mahendra Kumar
Objective for the dissertation was to work on the Indian visual histories recorded mainly through photography. The dissertation functions not only as a database of alternate histories, but also contextualises this history around the wider world of politics, society as well as aesthetics of the time in a particular region.
During the dissertation, I worked on the photographic collection of Mahendra Kumar, recently acquired by NFAI, Pune. Mahendra Kumar was a cinematographer & a close associate of the filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak. The purpose was not only to archive & digitize but also contextualize this history in a broader world of politics, society, and aesthetics of the time in a particular region. Out of 2000 scanned negatives, I curated around 160 photos into six different chapters with different contexts in the form of a book. A book that will sustain years to come.
