Udaan

The Design Project I theme was Contemporary Jharkhand. The basic premise was to  research, explore and produce a cohesive and coherent documentary photography work.

Proposal:

In the village Hutup near Ranchi-Jharkhand, girls have found a new way to fight gender discrimination through sports specifically football. NGO YUWA, Cofounded by Franz Gastler, took initiative and trained girls in football and in July 2013 the team went on to secure third prize in Gasteiz Cup, Spain. Currently this program has spread in around 15 villages, coaches coming from the same village. Through this program, girls who are now coach earn money for themselves due to which they have gain confidence, self-respect and even aspiring for brighter careers.

Girls participating in program have a very tight schedule; they leave early in the morning for morning practice, then they have their school. Mostly the girls attain Yuwa School, which is the initiative of Rose Gastler. After school, they get some free time for an hour or so and then they have their evening practice. However, the day does not end for the girls after evening practice; coming home, many of them cook as their parents work until late in their farms. Before sleeping, they study or relax themselves to go for practice early morning.

The objective of the project is to document the daily life of the girls on field, off field and the amalgamation of football in their home space.
